Board of Review Commissioner Cabonargi Announces More Property Tax Appeal Seminars

Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Michael M. Cabonargi will hold a series of property tax appeal seminars in the coming days and weeks. The seminars consist of a brief presentation on the assessment and property tax system followed by an opportunity for residents to receive assistance filing appeals, submitting evidence and asking Board of Review analysts any questions they may have regarding the appeal process.

Attendees are asked to bring their property tax bills in order to more efficiently file an appeal. he first occurs on Thursday, August 30th at the School District 65 Joseph Hill Center, at 1500 McDaniel Avenue in Evanston. This event is co-sponsored by Commissioner Larry Suffredin, Senator Jeffrey Schoenberg, Senator Heather Steans, Representative Robyn Gabel, Representative Daniel Biss, Representative Kelly Cassidy, and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky.

Beginning on Thursday, September 6th, Cabonargi will hold 3 seminars in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. These events are co-sponsored by Alderman Tom Tunney, Alderman Harry Osterman, Alderman Ameya Pawar, Alderman James Cappleman, Senate President John Cullerton, Senator Heather Steans, Representative Sara Feigenholtz, Representative Ann Williams, Representative Kelly Cassidy, Commissioner Bridget Gainer, Commissioner John Fritchey, and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky.

The September 6th event takes place at 6:30PM at the Broadway Armory, located at 5917 North Broadway. Subsequent Lakeview seminars take place on Monday, September 10th at 6:30PM at Sulzer Regional Library, located at 4455 North Lincoln Ave, and on Thursday, September 13th at 6:30PM at the Uptown branch of the Chicago Public Library, located at 929 West Buena Ave.

“We want the appeals process to be fair, open, and convenient to Cook County residents, said Commissioner Cabonargi. “My office is bringing the services of the Board of Review directly to Cook County residents and providing more transparency and fairness in the property assessment appeal process. We hold these seminars in the neighborhoods on nights and weekends, when it is convenient for the people who need our services most,” he said.

“Our seminars educate the public about the appeals process and offer property owners the opportunity to appeal their assessments, provide evidence, and talk with analysts without taking time off of work and coming downtown,” Cabonargi added.

The only requirement for a taxpayer to appeal a property assessment is a completed complaint form filed before the township appeal period closes.  Taxpayers also have the option of filing a complaint online at CookCountyBoardofReview.com. Lakeview Township closes for appeals on September 18th.

The Cook County Board of Review is a quasi-judicial agency responsible for adjudicating assessment appeals for all property in Cook County. Last year the Board reviewed over 341,000 appeals.  Commissioner Michael M. Cabonargi represents the 2nd District of the Cook County Board of Review, which includes Lakeview Township.
