Preckwinkle Appoints CEO of CURE to Illinois Medical District Commission

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle today appointed Carmita Vaughan, CEO of Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE) to the Illinois Medical District Commission. Preckwinkle cited Vaughan’s strong managerial experience, her familiarity with medical issues and healthcare, and her deep-rooted commitment to service as her main reasons for her selection for this important position. “Ms. Vaughan’s dedication to medical research, public health and compassionate service will serve her well on the IMDC,” said President Preckwinkle. “She will be a strong voice for improving the delivery of health care in our communities and continuing to strengthen the Illinois Medical District’s role in Cook County’s economy.” The Illinois Medical District Commission is a seven-member appointed body charged with overseeing, coordinating and reviewing development projects within the Illinois Medical District, located on Chicago’s near west side, as well as supervising security and transportation needs. The President of the Cook County Board appoints one member to the commission. Prior to joining CURE as Chief Operating Officer in 2010, Carmita Vaughan served as Chief Strategy Officer for America’s Promise Alliance, a youth development organization founded by Gen. Colin Powell and currently led by Alma J. Powell. Previously, she served as the Chief of Staff of the Chicago Public Schools Office of High Schools and High School Programs. Vaughan has served in global marketing, strategic planning, and engineering/operations management roles in several Fortune 500 companies, including Procter and Gamble and Danaher Corporation. Vaughan holds a Master’s in Business Administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, and received her undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. She is a member of the Board of Directors for Marwen (Chicago-based arts education organization), the Academy of Urban School Leadership (AUSL) and America’s Promise Alliance. Vaughan resides in Chicago with her husband, Damon.
